Squad-based, tactical shooters are prolific, but not too many are set within the galaxy far, far away. Many fans would agree, however, that Republic Commando knocked it out of the park. Recently, the game received the remastered treatment on both the Nintendo Switch and PS4.
PC players will have to rely on mods to enhance their experience. However, there is one total conversion mod that is pretty well regarded by fans. The mod contains a variety of enhancements that spices up the core gameplay. Higher resolution, HD textures are implemented as well as new animations.
Arc Trooper is certainly one of the more impressive projects available for the game. One of the many problems of trying to play an old game on modern hardware is the screen resolution. With this mod installed, HUD elements appear correctly when playing on larger, widescreen resolutions.
In particular, crosshairs are now centered as they should be, allowing for a much smoother gameplay experience. The TeamXtreme WarPack mod adds a massive host of multiplayer features. Over maps are included, along with new weapons and factions. Other small quality of life changes are included as well. Overall, the mod allows for a tighter experience without drastically changing the core vanilla mechanics.
Star Wars: Republic Commando is no exception considering it still contains a few annoying graphical bugs. On new computers, these problems are assuredly irritating. Graphics Fix is an incredibly helpful mod that should relieve some headaches. More specifically, it eliminates bump mapping issues, which tends to make the game crash. Larger aspect ratios are accommodated and allow the gameplay to appear normal and unstretched. This mod, also bearing the name of Capital Supremacy , seeks to import this gameplay element into Republic Commando.
If work continues, Capital Supremacy should turn out to be a truly impressive mod.
